Today we are not considered just a vocational training center but a comprehensive rehabilitation agency.
We surely have come a long way since opening our doors in 1955 to a small group of persons considered to be physically challenged. As we have grown, our mission and programs have expanded to meet the needs of the Long Island community. Today we are not considered just a vocational training center but a comprehensive rehabilitation agency. This simply means that in our efforts to assist disabled people in living and functioning independently we identify all their needs and goals and address them by developing specific plans to help reach them. This has resulted in offering many new programs to a diverse population.
We consider Skills Unlimited to be a unique organization because we do not limit our services to any one particular group. Today our recipients include persons with emotional and psychological problems, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, and physical challenges. We employ a dedicated staff of professionals who work cooperatively and are very goal oriented.
Since 1955, many individuals have crossed our threshold. Hundreds of them are currently employed in the community and continue to receive support services from our staff. Many remain employed in our sheltered workshop or are employed by Skills Unlimited to work on special federal and state contracts.
I am very proud of all of the consumers and staff members that make up Skills Unlimited, and I am confident that we will continue to serve the Long Island community and its disabled population for years to come.
