HAUPPAUGE, NY - July 25, 2006 - The Supported Employment staff of Skills Unlimited has been supplying individual counseling and job coaching to Hauppauge High School special education students for the last several years during a six week summer school session. This program has provided young adults with a disability the opportunity to experience working and receiving a salary.
All the students are employed on the school grounds. They have come to realize the important but subtle difference between student and employee status. The students are responsible for signing in and out using a time clock, use staff break areas and address their new ‘peers’ by first name as other adults do in the work place.
While working on their assigned job tasks they have the assistance and support of a job coach. The job coach assists in their initial training and then shadows them and provides any crisis intervention and counseling if necessary.
The job coaching staff and staff at the high school report that they are witnessing significant maturation and skill retention.
