Recovery from Mental Illness- New Curriculum at SUCCESS

The ability of people having mental illness to recover from the effects of the illness has been studied by researchers for over 30 years. The results of many different studies all seem to indicate that recovery is not only possible but happens more frequently than it doesn't: approximately two out of every three get better.

In addition, the research has identified certain factors which tend to increase the chances that any given person will recover. Newer and better medications are certainly important, but one factor that people have control over is their willingness and ability to learn about their illness and to manage their symptoms. This orientation to recovery has become the guiding principle of the New York State Office of Mental Health.

The Skills Unlimited SUCCESS program has been revising its curriculm for the last two years to integrate the results of these studies into its program. The classes are available to anyone over 18 years old who have been diagnosed with mental illness and are held at various times during the day and evening in order for participants to conveniently access them even if they work or attend other programs.
