SUCCESS Day Program
SUCCESS is a division of Skills Unlimited that provides rehabilitative, social, educational, recreational, and enrichment services to adults recovering from mental illness. Located in Ronkonkoma, New York, the program primarily serves people residing in the towns of Islip, Babylon, and Brookhaven. There is no charge for the services provided at SUCCESS, and the only requirement for participating is that the applicant be diagnosed with a mental illness. Transportation is also provided at no cost to all participants.
Mental Illness Education
The program offers a variety of classes and activities designed to support recovery and the development of living skills. Many participants need to learn about their illness and to focus on managing their symptoms to the greatest extent possible. Towards this end, SUCCESS offers a number of recovery-oriented classes in which the participants get assistance and support while they learn about psychiatric symptoms, medications, and the mental health delivery service system in general. This education is considered the first step in the recovery process.
Counselor Support
All participants are assigned a counselor who will assist them in developing personalized goals. They can then chose a schedule of classes and activities that will provide them with the tools they will need to achieve their goals, or to develop a longer-range plan that might require additional services elsewhere. Each plan is individualized because each individual is different.
Social Activities
One component of SUCCESS that is emphasized is socialization. Frequently, people with mental illness find that they are uncomfortable in the company of other people and therefore tend to isolate themselves. The activities of SUCCESS are designed to be fun and to draw participants into the activities along with other members. The parties and holiday events, for example, are program-wide group activities that they might not otherwise get the opportunity to enjoy. Another example, Community Exploration trips, offers group outings for shopping, recreation, and community awareness.
Our hope is to assist people with mental illness in managing the parts of their illness that are particularly limiting, and to offer hope that they can become productive once again. Because the SUCCESS program is a division of Skills Unlimited, we can make use of the vocational resources available at the Oakdale facility to transition people into a level of employment or skill development that will foster independence and recovery.
